Book Presentation: Higher Expectations – Practical Actions for Better Academia
Event Description
We cordially invite you to the upcoming book presentation:
Higher Expectations – Practical Actions for a Better Academia
By Dr. Roberta Hawkins, University of Guelph, Canada
In this session, Roberta Hawkins will introduce the premise of her recent book (co-authored with Leslie Kern), Higher Expectations: How to Survive Academia, Make It Better for Others, and Transform the University. In the book, she argues that although universities are broken in many ways, we can raise our expectations for the conditions of working, learning, and sharing knowledge, and contribute to meaningful change. The book’s aim is to offer a practical guide to navigating academia for people who want to improve their own work lives and create better conditions for everyone. In this session Roberta will introduce the five main themes of the book: collaboration, moving beyond metrics, dismantling hierarchies, centering the margins and improving work-life balance. This interactive session will include a discussion on strategies for taking back control of your time and the importance of time to academic values and purpose. She will share examples of everyday actions and bigger, “What if?” ideas that are already being used at some institutions and that we can collectively work toward.
