The finance and banking sector holds a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development. Capital and investment are essential to realizing sustainable solutions, as financial flows support the scaling of innovative business models and technologies. Recognizing this, international and regional regulatory bodies have introduced a range of sustainability-related frameworks and directives intended to guide the financial sector—and the broader economy—towards more sustainable practices.

However, after several years of implementing these comprehensive regulatory frameworks, a shift appears to be underway. The complexity and demanding nature of the current regulatory landscape have placed considerable strain on organizations’ resources, motivation, and capacity to comply. In response, new legislative proposals, such as the EU's Omnibus Directive, aim to streamline sustainability reporting and reduce the administrative burden on companies—while still maintaining momentum toward sustainable development.

But will these new measures achieve their intended goals? What implications will Omnibus have for European businesses, particularly in the banking sector? This seminar will explore the evolving relationship between sustainability and banking, with a particular focus on EU regulations and their current and future impact on the sector.
