Building Transnational Governance
Transnational governance and technocracy have gone hand in hand, often serving to depoliticize the making of global rules, and the material interests and ideological programs behind them. In her work, Eleni Tsingou focuses on those making global policy in unusual spaces, be it elite associations, the compliance offices of banks, or international conference halls. Informed by debates on policy communities, professions, and expert groups, she looks at how private actors in particular build transnational governance. She argues that they do so by establishing and maintaining status orders and forms of institutionalization. This includes clubs with honour-based codes of conduct, professionalization processes that affirm identities, and rules of engagement on how to argue with each other while not challenging the distribution of who gets what too much.
Eleni Tsingou is a Professor of International Political Economy and Transnational Governance. Her research is empirically eclectic, covering financial regulation, anti-money laundering, demographic change, and governance in the field of medical technologies. Her work is driven by an interest in how knowledge is mobilized to shape the boundaries of what is considered appropriate governance.
