Corporate activism in the Nordics: Taking and maintaining company stances on socio-political issues
Companies that take public stances on debated political decisions and campaign for or against controversial socio-political issues engage in a form of activism. Activism, by definition, is an act that aims to challenge the status quo, and typically in CSR research it is a phenomenon that acts as a counterforce to corporate power. But what does it mean that companies engage in activism firsthand and use activist tactics such as confrontation and disobedience? Dr. Laura Olkkonen will introduce her on-going research on corporate activism with the example of a Finnish case company that has addressed different socio-political topics over the years, such as sexual minority rights, racism, gender equality, and pushing for CSR legislation. Her study addresses corporate activism both as a form of framing, resting on a classic framework of diagnostic (identifying the problem and assigning responsibility), prognostic (suggesting solutions), and motivational framing (calls to action), and from the perspective of performativity, whereby the company narrates and justifies their role as an activist company, and also urges others to follow their example.
Laura Olkkonen (PhD, Docent) is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Business and Management at LUT University, Finland. Her current research project, funded by the Academy of Finland, concentrates on corporate activism. She teaches sustainable business and business ethics, and acts as a local contact person for PRME at LUT.
