Accidental Feminism: Gender Parity and Selective Mobility Among India’s Professional Elite

Event Description

In this seminar, Dr Swethaa S. Ballakrishnen will present their new book “Accidental Feminism” (Princeton University Press) with commentary from Maj Grasten (MPP) and Megan Tobias Neely (IOA).

Accidental Feminism shows how elite law firms in India offer a surprising oasis for women within a hostile, predominantly male industry. Less than 10 percent of the country’s lawyers are female, however women in the most prestigious firms are significantly represented at both entry and partnership level. Elite workspaces are notorious for being unfriendly to new actors, so what allows for aberration in certain workspaces?

Drawing from observations and interviews with more than 130 elite professionals, Swethaa examines how a range of underlying mechanisms - gendered socialisation and essentialism, family structures and dynamics, and firm and regulatory histories - afford certain professionals egalitarian outcomes that are not available to their local and global peers.

Swethaa S. Ballakrishnen is a socio-legal scholar at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. Their research examines the intersections between law, globalisation and stratification from a critical feminist perspective. Particularly, across a range of sites and different levels of analysis, Swethaa’s work interrogates how law and legal institutions create, continue, and counter different kinds of socio-economic inequalities.
