Event Description

The Centre for Organization and Time (COT, IOA) invites to an
online @bout time seminar on:

Strategy restoration

With Associate Professor Emanuel Gomes
Nova School of Business and Economics

Abstract

Emanuel Gomes will hold his seminar on his paper “Strategy restoration” which he co-authored with Professor Kent D. Miller and Associate Professor David W. Lehman published in Long Range Planning. This paper proposes a conceptualization of a distinct type of strategic change that they coined “strategy restoration.” They outline how strategy restoration fills a gap in current understandings of strategic change, which tend to assume that managers strive to break free from the constraints of their organization's past so that they can forge ahead into the future. However, they argue that some organizations instead opt to reinterpret and re-enact abandoned strategies drawn from their own history. Hence, they elaborate conditions that motivate and enable organizations to pursue strategy restoration rather than other types of strategic change and develop a framework with two components—organizational traditionality and memory—that characterize the organization itself, and two—nostalgia and perceptions of the organization's authenticity— that characterize the market in which the organization operates. They also discuss the implications that their proposed conceptualization of strategy restoration and its underlying mechanisms have for researchers with a special interest in the role of time.
