Speaker: Professor Paula Jarzabkowski, Bayes (formerly Cass) Business School, London, & Queensland Business School, Australia

This seminar aims to generate a broader perspective on and richer conversation about the publishing process by focusing on the publication trajectory and how we can connect decisions about types of outlets with generation of ideas and insights over time, often based on large data sets. We have invited Professor Paula Jarzabkowski to reflect on the following questions with us:

• How do you decide what to publish in what order and in what outlet/venue (e.g., journals, chapters, books, and op-eds)?
• How do you get the most out of a good dataset?
• What should you avoid in publishing multiple manuscripts on the same research project and data? For example, the issue of slicing the data. What does this mean, and how do you avoid it?
• How do you create synergies between the ideas presented in books and papers? Do your ideas build on one another or deepen across publications? Or do you take the data in new and different directions?
• How do you develop an overarching argument as a scholar through publishing in different formats?
• Do you strategically “stack” your work? Do you develop an idea through different tasks? For example, in the journal review process, a book prospectus, a conference presentation, or in teaching.
• How have you approached this at different career stages? How should junior scholars strategize this compared to mid-career and more senior scholars?

The seminar will be interactive. Please come prepared to share your questions about and experiences with the publishing process.
