Avenues of leadership: Relationality, intersectionality, response-ability
Leadership, once the prerogative of the privileged few at the top of organizational hierarchies, is now a potential resource for everyone and open to performance everywhere. As such, the field of leadership studies is in need of reform while leadership can become the driver of much needed organizational change. In her inaugural lecture, Sara Louise Muhr traces three avenues through which leadership may enhance its organizational relevance: First, leaders must recognize their own and their organizations’ relationality, the ways in which one emerges by connecting to the other. Second, leaders must center individual and collective intersectionalities, focusing on the inclusion and activation of organizational difference. Third, leaders must become response-able to their organizations, able to listen and learn and to take responsibility for organizational action. In presenting these avenues, Sara invites colleagues, collaborators, and community members to join her in the continued development of leadership as an inclusive practice.
Sara Louise Muhr is Professor of Diversity & Leadership at the Department of Organization as well as academic co-director of CBS Leadership Centre. Her research focuses on critical perspectives on managerial identity, leadership and HRM, especially in relation to issues around diversity and expectations to employees and leaders in modern, flexible ways of working. Sara engages with leadership practice through public lectures, leadership coaching and organizational workshops on diversity, bias and inclusive leadership.
