Abstract
Throughout the last decade, large corporates have focused on defining their sustainability targets and communicating. Now, it’s time for ambitions to become actions, which requires a different, and integrated approach inside the company. This lecture will explore how the new external landscape requires front-runner companies to strengthen their sustainability strategy and activities.
New trends and expectations across society, and subsequent legislation and regulation are increasing in complexity and accelerating in pace. A wide spectrum of stakeholders ranging from multilateral institutions to political authorities, as well as eNGOs, unions, media, local communities and employees, we see an accelerated interdependence between regulation, the market, and the sustainability agenda.
Successful strategic direction and strong governance must start at the top and be anchored within the corporate strategy, executive management and Board of Directors.
The Sustainability ambitions should become integral to overall purpose, competitive differentiation and advocacy work, and linked to both internal and external value-creation. Sustainability actions have to be substantial, innovative and engaging – and preferably delivered through strategic partnerships with suppliers or customers.
All these changes are easy to put on paper but are all-encompassing and challenging since they touch on areas such as competitive differentiation, organisation, competences, data and governance. Only by mainstreaming sustainability can companies deliver on their commitments and hopefully become a catalyst for change towards a more sustainable world.
