Seminar: The Corporation as Governance Actor

Event Description

The Corporation as Governance Actor

Seminar May 10, 2022 co-hosted by the Center for Corporate Governance and CBS Sustainability

Location: SP.D4.20

Time: 2-4pm

Corporations are becoming increasingly powerful and taking on more governing roles (e.g. protecting labor and human rights, regulating markets and societies, providing public goods). Recently a growing number of corporations have developed a corporate purpose that is about more than shareholder value.  At the same time public regulation is emerging in new areas such as mandating the gender composition of boards and requiring third party verification of non-financial reporting. How legitimate and effective are corporations as governance actors? How are or should corporations be governed by public policy and private actors? This research seminar will address these important questions from different vantage points.

Program

  1. David Ciepley Visiting Professor at Aarhus University, a political theory perspective on the corporation
  2. Jean Pascal Gond, Professor, Cass Business School: a business ethics/CSR perspective
  3. Jeremy Moon, Professor, Sustainability Center: a political science perspective
  4. Steen Thomsen, Professor, Center for Corporate Governance, CBS: an economist perspective

The session will be moderated by Professor Jette Steen Knudsen, Visiting Otto Mønsted Professor, Center for Corporate Governance.
