Workshop: Batteries and Electrical Energy Storage in Shipping

Event Description

Electrification is a central aspect of the green transition of shipping, but lack of commercial electrical energy storage solutions for shipping challenge the speed and the extent at which shipping can make a green transition. Today, batteries are used to electrify local and small ferries either completely or in hybrid setups with fuel cells and combustion engines. Solutions for long distance and heavy shipping are still in their infancy but showing potential. However, the dominant commercial electrical storage method, lithium batteries, are expensive and in high demand in other sectors. Furthermore, they require critical and scarce raw materials and are energy intensive to produce. Therefore, the industry is currently exploring alternative technologies that may be applied to store energy onboard different types of vessels.

The aim of this workshop is to bring shipowners and operators together with experts from the industry and academia to explore the potential and challenges of different energy storage technologies today and in the future. We will focus on the practical use of batteries, potential alternative core technologies and electrical energy storage methods, recycling, and sustainability. We hope to show cases in operation to demystify the topic, bring forward the central challenges, confirm or refuse central myths and stories, and, most importantly, connect central experts across the industry and academia to bridge knowledge and pave the foundation for potential future collaborations.
