Energy Diplomacy and International Agreements: The Cases of Denmark's Cooperation with Brazil, Chile, and Colombia

Objective: The aim of this lecture is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intricate world of energy transition policies, with a focus on sustainable development initiatives in Latin America. It seeks to highlight the vital role of international agreements in shaping the energy relationship between Denmark and Latin American countries.

Focus: The session will delve into Denmark's collaborative efforts in green transition, particularly examining the initiatives and strategies of Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. These countries have embarked on diverse policy paths, including liberalising their electricity markets, and fostering incentives for green energy development. Insights from the Danish Energy Agency will be featured, emphasising their role in supporting Green Transition for Sustainable Development in Latin America.

Program Schedule:

1. 14:00-14:45: Energy Transition and Sustainable Development: Brazil, Chile, and Colombia

Presenter: Bernardo Busel Niedmann, Special Advisor at the Centre for Global Cooperation, Danish Energy Agency.

Bernardo Busel Niedmann serves as a Special Advisor at the Danish Energy Agency. He has worked as a specialist in the regulation of renewable energy in government-to-government programs with Colombia, Brazil, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Türkiye, South Korea, and Chile.

Before joining the Danish Energy Agency in 2021, he was a partner in a law firm in Santiago de Chile, where he specialised in energy law, working with clients from more than twenty countries and focusing his practice in litigation and transactional advice in the energy sector. He has been ranked by Legal 500 and Best Lawyers® as a leading practitioner in the energy law field.

Bernardo has been invited as an expert in energy regulation to UNCTAD and WTO panels and to consult privately in the regulation of trade in energy, besides serving as an adjunct professor of Electricity Law at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile for three years. He holds an Advanced Master of Laws (Energy Law) from the Universities of Copenhagen, Groningen, Aberdeen, and Oslo (International Bar Association Scholarship recipient) and an LL.B. degree from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, Chile.


2. 14:45-15:10: Interactive Dialogue with CBS Students

   - Focus: A discussion on the influence of international agreements in shaping our energy landscape.
