Harboring Change: Creating a Greener Shipping Ecosystem
Event Description
Jakob Hjortlund, Senior Director, Maritime Research and Advisory at MBShipbrokers
Liping Jiang, Associate Professor, Department of Operations Management, CBS
Sarah Wulff Wilhelmsen, Research Analyst, MB Shipbrokers
The shipping industry is facing a major crisis. Due to the ongoing conflicts in Russia and the Middle East, the prices of fossil fuels have skyrocketed, making it more expensive and riskier to transport goods across the world. Ships must choose between taking the perilous route through the Suez Canal, where they face attacks from rebel groups, or going around the Cape of Good Hope, which adds thousands of kilometers and tons of carbon emissions to their journey. Either way, they are losing money and harming the environment.
But what if there was a better way? What if we could power the ships of the future with clean and renewable fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methane? These fuels can be produced from water and electricity, using sources like wind, solar, and hydro power. They can also be stored and used in ships and planes, reducing the dependence on oil and gas. This would not only lower the costs and risks of shipping, but also help fight climate change and air pollution.
However, this vision is not yet a reality. The technology and infrastructure for green fuels are still under development, and the transition will require massive investments and collaboration from governments, businesses, and researchers. The shipping industry accounts for over 80% of the world's trade volume and nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. With some predictions saying emissions can rise by 130% without intervention, we need to act now if we want to achieve a carbon neutral future by 2050.
That is why we invite you to join us for an informative discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the green shipping revolution. You will hear from experts and innovators who are working on the cutting-edge solutions for cleaner fuels, ship design, and port infrastructure. You will also have the chance to network with other professionals and students who share your interest and passion for a sustainable future. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the change. Register now and get ready to embark on a journey towards a greener shipping industry.
